WALTER BORLA ON
STREET PROJECT.
Mr. Borla asked the council if it would be possible to name the street and walkway behind the Helper Jr. High. There are no homes on the street, so no address changes would be required. The street runs behind about four homes that are located on Vernal Street and then turns into a walkway for the Helper Jr. High. Mr. Borla would like to name the street Harry Truman Street and Walkway and possibly place a plaque by the top of the rock steps. President Truman was the only president to stop in Helper twice to speak to the people. Mr. Borla could remember President Truman on the back of the train talking to the people and having several come up and shake his hand. Mr. Borla stated that he has never seen that many people in the town of Helper as there were at President Truman’s speeches. They bused students in from the surrounding towns and closed the post office for a few hours Mr. Borla recalled, it was quit the event.
There aren’t many of us still in Helper who recall the historic visits, so without some commemoration these events may fade into the annals of history.
Council Member Jones moved to name the street Harry
Truman Street and Walkway and place a plaque by the steps. Council Member
Armstrong seconded the motion. Motion
Carried. Buchanan, Farrell, Mascaro, Jones and Armstrong all voting yes.
MELANIE STEELE
DISCUSSION ON PROPERTY LOCATED ON 1ST WEST.
Melanie and Ben Steele asked the council if they had decided on selling them the property behind 242 1st West? Ben and Melanie handed out some pictures of the property that they would like to acquire from the city. Council Member Jones had looked over the property in question and thought that part of the City’s mining display may be on the Steele’s property. Council Member Jones and Armstrong thought an exchange could be worked out. Council Member Farrell asked the Steele’s if they had done a survey? Ms. Steele told the council that it would cost about $1,000 to do a survey. Ms. Steele would be happy to do the survey if the council would be willing to sell the property. Ms. Steele showed the council a picture of the historical home they would build on the property. Attorney Strate advised the council that the property could be sold to the Steele’s only without going to bid according to our surplus property ordinance.
Council Member Mascaro moved to leave the property as it
is until a complete survey is done. Council Member Buchanan seconded the motion. Buchanan, Farrell, Mascaro, and Armstrong
all voting yes, Jones voting no.
ADJOURNMENT:
There being no further business Council Member Farrell moved to adjourn. Council Member Mascaro seconded the motion. Buchanan, Farrell, Mascaro, Jones and Armstrong voting yes. Meeting adjourned.
I here by certify that the foregoing represents a true, accurate and complete record of the Helper City Council meeting held on Thursday, December 6, 2007.
