In the early 1990’s, Helper City moved into Sally Mauro Elementary School to begin teaching the D.A.R.E. program.  In 1998, we moved into Helper Junior High School due to a new 7th grade curriculum.  The junior high program has been very positive to again assist our students in resisting drugs and violence as they grow older. In 2002, we had to make a decision due to funding to teach the program in only one of our schools.  We felt that the Helper Jr. High was the choice due to the children being a little older.  Funding for all city's in Utah is a major problem but we have been able to keep our program going for the children.

With the D.A.R.E. program in force, we have placed school drug free zone signs around both of our schools in Helper.  Some of the citizens in our communities may not be aware that penalties are enhanced one degree if they are found in possession of any controlled substance within 1000 feet of a school, park, church, park, pre-school, public parking lot, etc.  Helper Police Department is committed and will enforce the enhancement whenever possible to help our community get rid of drugs.

Our agency has seen that since we have been teaching the program at our schools, children begin to see that Law Enforcement is here to help them.  Children now work with our agency better.

We ask that all citizens report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods to assist the police department in preventing crimes.
